Not ready for fulltime policing?

Volunteering as a Special Constable is an excellent way to experience policing firsthand while balancing your existing work, studies, or family commitments. Many of our Specials go on to apply for fulltime roles, while others choose to continue volunteering longterm.

Special Constables are volunteer Police Officers who play a vital role in helping keep the Isle of Man safe. By committing your time, you will make a real difference to the community while gaining valuable skills, confidence, and pride along the way. Special Constables are encouraged to volunteer at least 100 hours annually to support community safety and policing efforts.

We are looking for volunteers who can earn the trust and respect of the public, want to make a positive impact in their community, and are committed, responsible, and willing to learn.

From tackling crime and supporting the community to offering reassurance when it is needed most, this is a role where no two days are ever the same. As a Special Constable, you will volunteer within a dynamic, 24/7 policing environment that demands adaptability, resilience, commitment, and professionalism even though you won’t be working around the clock yourself.

As a Special Constable, you will wear the same uniform, carry the same equipment, and hold the same powers of arrest as regular Officers. You will work alongside experienced colleagues, supporting a wide range of policing activities and contributing directly to community safety.

Volunteering with the Isle of Man Constabulary is a fantastic way to build strong community connections and develop transferable skills. Our Specials come from all walks of life from teachers and parents to skilled engineers and many have shared how the role has helped them grow in confidence both personally and professionally, all while continuing with their careers or studies.

You will find yourself:

• Collaborating with other emergency services
• Addressing antisocial behaviour
• Being a visible presence at major events such as TT, MGP and more
• Responding to emergency calls and incidents
• Investigating crimes and gathering evidence
• Supporting victims and witnesses
• Engaging with young people to build trust in the Police

Our dedicated trainers will support you throughout your development. Training blends practical learning with theory and accommodates different learning styles, ensuring you are fully equipped for the role.

When it is time to hit the streets, you won’t face it alone. You will be expected to demonstrate courage, act with respect and empathy, and uphold the highest standards of public service, providing a calm and reassuring response whenever the community needs us.

The following dates are mandatory for all applicants. You must be able to attend these sessions to continue with your application.

Fitness Test & Computer Assessment Test

Initial assessments at the Staff Development Centre, Station Road, Port Erin

• Thursday 10th September 2026 (hourly intervals from 8am)

Access Centre

Staff Development Centre, Station Road, Port Erin

• Tuesday 13th to Friday 16th October 2026 (Session times will be confirmed depending on applicant numbers)

Come and meet us in person

We encourage all applicants to come along to our dropin sessions and information evenings. These events are a great opportunity to speak directly with serving officers, ask questions, and get an honest insight into what the role involves. Whether you are ready to apply or just exploring your options, meeting us in person is one of the best ways to understand whether a career with the Isle of Man Constabulary is right for you.
